Michael Blum har studerat historia på Sorbonne, Paris och fotografi på
ENP, Arles innan han sökte sig till konstvärlden som en flykt undan det
akademiska fältets många begräsningar. I sitt arbete som består av video,
installationer och publikationer koncentrerar han sig på en omläsning av
kultur- och historieproduktion samt dekonstruktion av myter. Vare sig det
handlar om Karl Marx (Wandering Marxwards, 1999), ett par skor (My
Sneakers, 2001) eller kapitalismen (Homo Oeconomicus, 2000; potlatch.doc,
2002; 400 years without a grave is long time to shut up, 2002) söker hans
verk nya perspektiv på och förståelse av de objekt och koncept som omger
oss.

På senare tid har Michael Blum behandlat frågor som ligger närmare
Europas 1900-tals historia: The Monument to the Birth of the 20th Century
(O.K Centrum für Gegenwartskunst, Linz - Revolver Verlag, 2004-2005)
baseras på mötet mellan Hitler och Wittgenstein på en skolgård i Linz för
100 år sedan - och alla de spekulationer som kan uppstå kring det, allt
från politisk fars till en diskurs kring minne. A Tribute to Safiye Behar
visades 2005 på den nionde Istanbulbiennalen.Verket består av ett museum
dedikerat till den judiska marxist-feministen och fritänkaren som hade ett
30 år långt förhållande med Mustapha Kemal Atatürk och påverkade de flesta
av de reformer som han genomförde under 1920-talet och som formade det
moderna Turkiet.

Michael Blum är född 1966 i Jerusalem och bor i Wien. Han är
från och med november 2005 till slutet av februari 2006 Iaspisstipendiat i Malmö .

Michael Blum studied history at Paris University and photography at ENP,
Arles (F) before turning to an artistic practice as an escape from the
numerous limitations of the academic field. His videos, installations and
publications aim at re-reading the production of culture and history and
at deconstructing myths. Whether they're about Karl Marx (Wandering
Marxwards, 1999), a pair of shoes (My Sneakers, 2001) or capitalism (Homo
Oeconomicus, 2000 ; potlatch.doc, 2002 ; 400 years without a grave is long
time to shut up, 2002), his works are seeking new perspectives on and
resonances to surrounding objects and concepts.

Recently, Blum has been addressing issues more closely related to European
20th century history : The Monument to the Birth of the 20th Century ( O.K
Centrum für Gegenwartskunst, Linz - Revolver Verlag, 2004-05) was based on
the encounter of Hitler and Wittgenstein in a Linz schoolyard 100 years
ago - and all speculations that might arise from it, ranging from
political farce to memory discourse. In 2005, he was showing A Tribute to
Safiye Behar at the 9th Istanbul Biennial, a museum dedicated to the
Jewish marxist-feminist and free-thinker who had a 30-year long affair
with Mustapha Kemal Atatürk and influenced most of the reforms he was
implementing in the 1920's and which founded modern Turkey.
